Attorney John B. Pike successfully obtained a full acquittal for a client charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and terroristic threats following a jury trial in Luzerne County involving a fatal shooting outside a Pittston bar.

After approximately four hours of deliberation, the jury returned verdicts of not guilty on all charges. The client was released after spending 453 days incarcerated while awaiting trial.

## Case Overview

The case arose from a July 2017 confrontation outside a Pittston bar following a dispute involving a game of pool. According to trial testimony, tensions escalated outside the establishment, and the defense presented evidence that the client acted in self-defense when confronted by multiple individuals.

The defense further argued that racial hostility played a significant role in the events leading up to the incident.

## Defense Position at Trial

At trial, Attorney Pike emphasized that his client was:

* a hardworking business owner,

* a lawful firearm carrier,

* a homeowner,

* and an individual with no prior criminal record.

The defense argued that the evidence demonstrated the client reasonably feared for his safety during the confrontation.

Following the verdict, Attorney Pike stated:

“And the jury saw it, they saw it for what it was — ugly racism.”
